World Maps

I love maps, I always have done since I was in primary school. Not sure what sparked my interest in maps, but I can spend many a happy hour looking at a map reading the details revealed by the symbols and the lines.

Maps do go out of date, the maps I bought originally for my first Filofax in 1987 still had East and West Germany on them!

So maps are essential to me in any size of organiser.

I was recently asked if I knew of a source of world maps for Pocket size organisers and could I create one. Not difficult once you have a reasonable quality map image.

So here are some for you to download and print yourself. A world physical map and a time zone map.

World Map
Time Zone Map
Printing the above:
  • A5 Print on A4 size paper then fold in half and fold back to the edge (Z fold)
  • A6 Print on A5 size paper then fold in half and fold back to the edge (Z fold)
  • Personal Print on A4 size paper cut to 171 mm high then fold in half and fold back to the edge (Z fold)
  • Pocket Print on A4 size paper cut to 120 mm high then fold in half and fold back to the edge (Z fold)
If you want to use the PNG images for say a dashboard or divider they are here.

Stockholm Meet Up - 6 June 2018

At the beginning of June, Alison and I will be travelling to Sweden for about 10 days to visit some friends (one of Alison's author friends). We will be travelling around quite a bit during our short stay, but we will be in Stockholm in the middle of our visit.

So I would like to announce today that there will be a meet up in Stockholm on 6 June 2018. Yes it is mid-week, but the 6 June is I believe a National public holiday in Sweden.

The meet up is being co-ordinated with my good friend Janet Carr of 'This Bug's Life' at this point we have discussed a few ideas, but nothing is set in concrete yet.

So if you are interested in coming along to the meet up. Please contact me steve at philofaxy dot com or contact me via Facebook messenger and we will co-ordinate the details of the meet up with everyone interested.

I'm told there is a Vapiano's in Stockholm 😀 so that's high on the list of possible places to eat/meet at!!

It will be great to meet Janet again.

Free For All Friday No 491 by Laurie

Today is Friday the 13th! Some superstitions say it's an unlucky day, but I was born on a Friday the 13th so I feel they are lucky for me!

Are you superstitious with your Filofax in any way? Maybe not superstitious per se, but needing things to be a certain way or "just right." For example do you always have to have your monthly pages at the beginning of your planner and the weeks behind (like me)? Or maybe your tabbed sections always have to be in a particular order?

Do you keep anything in your planner "for luck?"

And as always on Fridays, feel free to discuss/ ask anything ring-binder related!

12 April 2018

Single Ring Organisers

We are of course very familiar 3 ring organisers (M2), 4 ring organisers (A4) 6 ring organisers (Mini, Pocket, Personal, A6, A5) and 9 ring organisers (Deskfax) oh and not forgetting 7 ring organisers (US  brands!) and 5 ring Van der Spek Mini organisers.... did I miss any?

"What about single ring organisers?"

'Single ring organisers..... We are coming up for 13 years of Philofaxy and they have never been mentioned before...... are they new then?'

"No... they pre-date Philofaxy!"

Back in September 2004, Merlin Mann shared with the internet his ideas for a Hipster PDA there are lots of variations of these about on the internet. His initial versions of these use a binder clip to hold the pages/cards together. However, I have seen versions of these that use a single ring to hold the pages together.

I will let Joe Van Cleave explain his own set up in more detail in this video:

Thank you to Karine for sharing the link with me to Joe's channel last week, she did comment that Joe was my US counterpart... I'm not sure if that is a complement or not!
Template files exist for the HPDA on DiY Planner, the site where I cut my teeth on sharing Filofax inserts!
Have you ever tried the Hipster PDA?

11 April 2018

A6 Reversed Enhanced Time Management Insert

So here is the A6 version of the Reversed Enhanced Time Management Insert which we recently shared with you in A5 size.

To work with the smaller size, like other A6 inserts I have had to reduce the number of lines per day to three. The line height becomes an issue if you go higher than that.

We have maintained the same number of lines per day throughout the whole week.

Naturally you can easily adjust the headings, shading, fonts etc to suit your own needs/requirements by editing the source file and redoing the mail merge.

Source Files:
Note to change the year or the 12 months covered you just need to edit cell A2 of the Excel file.

Merged Files:
When printing note these files are formatted to be A4 page size, to print on to A6 paper scale to fit (50%)

This version will be known as the 'Reversed Enhanced Time Management' insert by virtue of the positioning of the appointments section on the opposite page.

To customise the files you will need to download the relevant source files listed above. When you've made all the changes you like to the template, you can perform a mail merge to create your own insert for any period you like. Check out our Free Diary Inserts link if you want more information on how to do this, including videos at the bottom of the page.

Once again a big thank you to Ray at 'My Life All In One Place' for his hard work and co-operation with helping to create and support us with all these inserts.

Planner peace - by Anita

Looking back over the years since I purchased my first Filofax (a cherry personal Classic), I have owned many binders, and I have really enjoyed the variety that this has given me. However, as a minimalist at heart I've generally kept to a 'one in, one out' rule so that I have only owned a maximum of five at any one time. I do love looking at other people's photos of their larger collections though.

As time has gone on, I knew that I would eventually settle back down with just one binder, but I suppose I wasn't ready before as I had been enjoying trying out different models. For a long time, I used to use two binders together - a personal as my main planner and an A5 for planning projects and for when I wanted to write longer notes. However, I eventually sold my A5 as I just wasn't using it as my focus was always so much on the personal.

At one point, I did seriously considering moving over completely to the A6 size in my wonderful Mulberry. Whilst in some ways I do prefer the dimensions of A6 paper, I realised just how much personal sized paper I already have, so it seemed silly to waste that when I don't hate the size.

I have found my planner peace for quite some time now, but haven't written about it as I wanted to make sure that it was working! One important thing is that whatever I use needs some flexibility for my changing needs or for a little variety. I have been in my red Winchester since January 2017 and have recently sold all my other binders, which is such a relief. I admit that since moving into the Winchester, I have purchased a small number of others and moved into them, but have then immediately moved back out as I realised that I'd made a mistake.

This is what my planner peace looks like:

1) Pocket size Raydori kindly gifted to me by Ray Blake
I happened to mention on Facebook one day that I was tempted by the Midori Traveler's Notebook, but had never tried one and Ray very kindly offered to send me one free of charge. I love this one as it's a proper pocket size, instead of the normal Midori passport, so it will fit Field Notes, Moleskine cahiers or a pocket notebook. I tend to use the Raydori for when I need a change, or if I want something more portable than a personal Filofax.

2) Red Winchester
This is 'the one' and the mainstay of my planning.
I have two set ups that I can choose between and other than that, I don't mess with my system:
a) Getting Things Done based
b) Simplified set up - I am using this at the moment, but moving back to the GTD one would be very simple and would only involve moving into new sections.

3) A5 Leuchtturm lined notebook
I don't use this all the time, but will sometimes plan projects in here as it gives me so much more page space, compared with my Filofax. I also use it to make notes on any studying that I'm doing.

So, that's it!
I feel like I have the best of both worlds with using notebooks and a Filofax together, but my Winchester is the one that I mostly use as you can't beat the flexibility of being able to remove and replace pages.
